Prince Anathaen was a prominent Thenithrian royal, military commander, and heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Thenithria during the late Haethon Era. Widely regarded as one of the greatest military minds of his generation, Anathaen played a central role in the early stages of the War of the Five Nations, leading Thenithria’s counter-insurgency campaign against the rebel alliance known as the Coalition of the Realms. Although initially successful in his campaigns, he ultimately failed to prevent the Coalition’s victory and the fall of Thenithrian power in Northern Kallonia.
Prince Anathaen was born as the third son of the reigning King of Thenithria, placing him far from the line of succession. As a result, his early education was focused almost entirely on military theory, leadership, and martial disciplines. He was trained by some of the most prestigious strategists and warriors of the Thenithrian Empire, including Ketanite mercenary commanders and veteran legionaries.
Anathaen’s older brothers, Prince Onarthasse and Prince Kathaen, both perished in military campaigns, Onarthasse in Senkaria and Kathaen during the early stages of the Northern Kallonian rebellion, leaving Anathaen as the defacto heir to the throne of Thenithria.
Anathaen first distinguished himself as a general during the suppression of a rebellion in southern Southern Kallonia. His conduct during the Siege of Aenthrios earned him public acclaim for both his tactical brilliance and his restraint, preserving the city’s infrastructure and civilian population.
He later led successful campaigns against the mountain clans of Aeloen and nomadic insurgents in Senkaria, developing a reputation for decisive, ruthless tactics and unshakeable discipline. His victories solidified his status as a military prodigy and earned him the formal title of Laentarian of the Northern Legions, granting him command over Thenithria’s entire military apparatus in Northern Kallonia.
Prince Anathaen became the principal architect of the Thenithrian military response to the Coalition of the Realms, an alliance of rebel realms led by King Oustarn of Pacis. In the initial phases of the war, Anathaen’s legions swept through rebel-held territories, forcing Coalition armies to retreat into the forests and mountains of Bouropheia.
His most infamous engagement was the Battle of Pacis, where despite being heavily outnumbered, he inflicted catastrophic losses on Coalition forces through superior discipline, strategic use of terrain, and tight command structure. He personally led the subsequent sack of Pacis City, an act that drew both condemnation and fear from his enemies.
However, the arrival of the Norkinian Empire, joining the war on the side of the Coalition, marked a turning point. Thenithria’s overextension, internal instability, and simultaneous conflicts in distant colonies diluted Anathaen’s capacity to maintain control. Though he achieved a stunning victory over the Norkinian army at the Battle of Laengorn Pass, killing High King Haerothon II, the strategic situation continued to deteriorate.
Eventually, Anathaen was forced to withdraw as the combined Coalition and Norkinian forces overran Northern Kallonia and later sacked Thenithria itself following his death.
Prince Anathaen met his end during the Battle of Kyrhun, the climactic and final engagement of the War of the Five Nations. As Thenithrian forces retreated to the southern coastal city of Kyrhun, they found themselves encircled by a colossal combined army of Coalition and Norkinian forces. With no route of escape by land and the sea blocked, Prince Anathaen led a last stand atop the high coastal cliffs overlooking the city.
In the chaos of battle, Anathaen cut down scores of enemy soldiers, fighting with almost superhuman determination. Eyewitnesses described him as a "whirlwind of steel," single-handedly holding a broken flank against overwhelming odds. It was during this final stand that he was confronted by Roljar of Sarin, the formerly-exiled Commander of Norkinian forces turned war hero.
The two legends engaged in a fierce and iconic duel amidst the blood-soaked cliffs of Kyrhun. Though exhausted from the battle and carrying several wounds, Anathaen nearly defeated Roljar in single combat. However, a final well-placed blow from Roljar mortally wounded the Prince. As he stumbled, Anathaen fell from the cliff’s edge, vanishing into the sea below.
His body was never recovered.
The death of Prince Anathaen marked the symbolic and literal collapse of Thenithrian dominion in Northern Kallonia. With their commander dead and their last coastal stronghold overrun, the remaining Thenithrian legions either surrendered or were annihilated. Soon after, the Coalition and Norkinian forces launched their invasion of Southern Kallonia, culminating in the sack of Thenithria itself.
Despite his defeat, Anathaen's final stand at Kyrhun became the stuff of legend. To both allies and enemies, he embodied the relentless discipline, honour, and pride of the old Thenithrian Empire. In the centuries that followed, he was remembered in epic poems and warrior traditions, not as a tyrant, but as a tragic hero, unbending in loyalty and unmatched in martial skill, even in the face of death.
