Roljar of Sarin was a celebrated Norkinian military commander, war hero, and central figure in the War of the Five Nations. Once an exiled noble of the Norkinian Empire, Roljar rose to command its armies in Northern Kallonia, playing a decisive role in defeating the Kingdom of Thenithria and securing victory for the Coalition of the Realms and their Norkinian allies. Known for his martial brilliance, sense of honour, and complex legacy, Roljar is remembered as one of the most legendary figures in Patriamic history.
Born Roljar Raenanson into House Sarin, one of the prominent noble houses of Norkinia, Roljar earned distinction as a brutal and effective soldier during coastal raids across Aeloen, Watol, and Aungmar. He later served as a commander in the Norkinian-Hiwotsukerese War, where he was captured and then trained by the famed Hiwotsukerese general Achiro Itokai in the Ippiko Mountains. Upon returning to Norkinia after four years, Roljar was arrested due to his family's disgrace, his uncle, the then-Lord of House Sarin, had attempted a failed coup against the Norkinian throne.
Although Roljar was found innocent of any involvement, he was stripped of his titles and exiled from Norkinia’s cities. He lived as a recluse in the wilderness for several years, until fate called him back to war.
Following the catastrophic defeat of the Norkinian army at the Battle of Laengorn Pass, and the death of High King Haerothon II, Roljar was recalled by the newly crowned High King Bjarn II. Offered the chance to restore his honour in exchange for leading what remained of Norkinia’s forces in Northern Kallonia, Roljar accepted.
Arriving at Aephos, he reorganised the depleted Norkinian legions and coordinated with the embattled Coalition of the Realms, led by King Oustarn of Pacis. Roljar’s campaigns revitalised the northern war effort, culminating in a series of decisive victories against the Thenithrians.
Roljar’s most legendary moment came during the Battle of Kyrhun, the climactic engagement of the War of the Five Nations. As Coalition and Norkinian forces cornered the retreating Thenithrian army along the southern cliffs of Northern Kallonia, Roljar confronted Prince Anathaen, commander of the Thenithrian legions and heir to the throne.
In a legendary duel amidst the chaos of battle, Roljar and Anathaen fought atop the coastal cliffs. Despite being nearly overcome by the battle-worn Prince, Roljar landed a final, mortal blow. Anathaen fell from the cliff into the sea below, and his death broke the morale of the remaining Thenithrian forces.
Roljar led the final Siege of Thenithria, advancing with Coalition and Norkinian forces into the heart of the Southern Kallonian capital. Upon breaching the Royal Palace, Roljar found the ancient and ailing King of Thenithria already dead, slumped upon his throne. In a moment that would become a symbol of the war’s end, Roljar removed his cloak, draped it over the King’s body, and carried him through the burning capital.
As Roljar exited the palace and entered the city’s main square, still bearing the lifeless body of the monarch, fighting across the city began to cease. Norkinian and Thenithrian soldiers alike laid down arms in stunned silence. Roljar walked through the war-torn city to the Norkinian royal encampment, where he laid the body at the feet of High King Bjarn II, still wrapped in his cloak.
This singular act came to represent the symbolic end of the war.
Following the war, High King Bjarn II offered to restore Roljar’s honour and name him the new Lord of House Sarin. Roljar, however, declined. He requested instead that the title be passed to his exiled cousin, the rightful heir of House Sarin following his uncle’s execution.
Roljar withdrew from public life, settling in a modest homestead along the remote western coast of Norkinia. His ultimate fate remains unknown, though many tales emerged claiming of a reclusive graybeard giant residing somewhere nearby.
Roljar is widely regarded as one of the greatest warriors and most complex figures in Patriamic history. A man forged by loss, honour, and war, his story is one of redemption and restraint. Though responsible for many deaths, he is remembered less as a conqueror and more as a war-weary leader who sought peace in the twilight of his life.
He is honoured in memorials across Norkinia, Northern Kallonia, and Hiwotsukeru. Songs and poems often refer to him as The Fallen General, and The Last Warrior of the Five Nations.
